Coffee and Cancer
A great deal is written on diet and all forms of cancer, and research indicates that we may be able to prevent about 35% of cancer cases by making changes to our diet and lifestyle. A significant amount of research has been conducted in the field of diet and cancer over many years and some of these findings relate to coffee consumption. A growing body of scientific research indicates that coffee consumption does not have a harmful effect in relation to risk of cancer and there is substantial research pointing to its favourable influence on risk of some cancers.
Coffee and Diabetes
There are two common types of diabetes which may affect individuals, typically at different life stages. Type I diabetes, sometimes known as 'insulin dependent diabetes' or 'juvenile diabetes' is an inherited disease. Type II diabetes or non-insulin dependent diabetes was previously called 'adult-onset diabetes' because in the past it was typically diagnosed after age 40. However, with increasing levels of obesity and sedentary lifestyle, this disease is now being diagnosed among adolescents and sometimes in children as young as 10 and under. Research suggests that coffee drinking may be protective against the development of Type II diabetes, though further research is needed to fully understand the role of coffee in this disease.
Coffee and Exercise Performance
Exercise plays an important part in our daily lives. There is a considerable amount of scientific research that demonstrates the beneficial effect of caffeine from coffee and other sources and physical performance.
Coffee and Hydration
In hot climates and conditions of intense heat, or extreme energy expenditure, our bodies loose water, which if not replenished will lead to dehydration. For many years, health and exercise experts believed that coffee and other caffeinated beverages, which are mildly diuretic, promoted dehydration. In fact scientific research has shown that a moderate intake of coffee does not lead to dehydration and may count towards our daily fluid intake.
Coffee and Liver Function
Scientific research published in the last decade suggests that coffee may help provide protection against the development of liver disease. Research points to properties found in coffee that are associated with a lower risk of liver cirrhosis, in particular alcoholic cirrhosis.
Coffee and Parkinson's Disease
Parkinson's Disease is one of the most well known of all neurological disorders. It is found all over the world and an estimated four million people are affected worldwide. Research shows an inverse relationship between coffee drinking and the development of Parkinson's Disease. The mechanism of action for this effect has yet to be fully identified.
Coffee and Pregnancy
With increased attention being paid to nutrition and health issues, many women, especially those of child bearing age, are concerned about what they eat and drink during pregnancy and whilst breast feeding. Women's health, including nutrition during pregnancy and lactation, is an area of active research. The collective findings support moderate consumption of coffee during pregnancy.
Coffee and Safer Driving
Did you know that driving a vehicle when feeling sleepy causes more deaths and serious injury than drink driving? A safe counter measure to driver sleepiness, especially when a driver has reached the stage of fighting sleep, is to STOP driving, DRINK one or two cups of coffee (containing in total about 150 mg of caffeine) and take a short nap for about 15 minutes.
